Zonca, Italy

Home Up Sofia's Zonca JPG's

Sorry there has been such a delay in getting these pictures on the web.  I'm pretty much taking a few days while I'm back here in Torino to do some massive updating.  The volunteers and the native Italians of Zonca were really great people.  Zonca, Italy is north of Torino, a few hours away via car, in the Italian Alps.  You can't drive a car, take a bus or even hitch a ride to Zonca... only via foot can you arrive there.  The town was built in the 15th and 16th centuries.  The houses are made of stone and wood.  Most of the volunteers slept on hay.  I slept on the hay for a few days and then just slept on the flat stone in the first house and then on a wood balcony in the second place we crashed.  Sofia was kind enough to send me some pictures as well.  Click the above navigation button to view them!  As usual I normally forgot to bring my camera, but here are the pictures I took, and what a great lady to start off with, Hilde:

The workcamp lasted three weeks.  The second and third Thursdays we had pizza parties.  They were great, really some of the best times of the workcamp.  Here we have the cooking crew making preparing the pizza and Eros baking them in the oven.  The oven was usually heated for a few days before use, depending on what you wanted to make.

Pizza party

As you may have guessed, while we worked hard, we also partied hard!  Here we have Alberto doing some light drinking of some good Italian beer that Kuba and I lugged back from the store in Domodossola!  Drink Alberto, drink!

Alberto (crazy Italian)

We really had some great kids at the workcamp.  Cesare, Francesco's son, was a really cool kid.  I, of course, called him Julius as a nickname.  With the exception of being sick for a few days, Julius worked every day.  What a great kid.  We see Julius in action here, just goofing off.

Eros, one of the Zonca natives is working the oven.

Now that's how you make a pizza!  The workbench was constructed during the workcamp.  I'm not certain who the little girl was in the green pullover, but from the left we have Evelyn, Nicola, Katarina, Ricardo and a little bit of Marija.

Pizza line

Another view of the pizza production line.  The first time we had the pizza party I had maybe two pizza's, but a very large quantity of wine!  This time I made sure I got a little more pizza.. and even more wine!  We have most of the same people, with the addition of Kuba (he's getting some wine).  Off to the right we have the back of Hilde, Julius and Francesco.  I'm not certain who the legs belong to... I think Edwige.

I almost didn't get this shot!  Something was delaying with my camera so I was turning it to try to figure out what was going happening when it fired.  I can't remember the guy's name on the far left, but we have this cool conversation the first pizza night, the remainder from left to right are Francesco, Edwige and Kuba.

There we go.  That's the picture I originally wanted.  Now we have Arious, Edwige's dog!

Francesco, Edwige and Kuba

About this time I realize that I didn't really take so many picture during the workcamp.. so I decided to get people to pose for me.  Here's Kuba with some wine.

Evelyn and Kuba

I think Edwige noticed that I was getting a little manic about taking pictures so she made me sit down with Kuba for a photo.  Julius also wanted in the picture.

Ricardo was visiting Nicola and Eros, and helped us out while he was in town.

Ricardo and Sofia

I didn't realize that the Croatian girls, they hated it when I called them "The Croatian girls" were leaving the next morning so I'm glad I snapped this picture of them!  We also have Ricardo in the picture and a little bit of Nicola.

I think people were getting on to me that I was making them pose for a picture or two.  Here we have Bruno and Micheli, a couple from Belgium.

Woa, here we have the guy who was telling me how many years he had been building with rocks.  When we was telling me this information I had just brought a very nice stone to him for a very specific place in the wall we were building.  I told him if it didn't fit, then make it fit!  Here he is enjoying some wine and sitting with Edwige.

Nicola relieves Eros and works the oven.

Stefano, the workcamp leader, had been running and avoiding my camera, possibly from all the outstanding warrants he has!  Anyway, now he's famous on my website.  I made Hilde pose with him.

I caught Alberto behaving more normally.  Here he is with Micheli's daughter.

Alberto

Unfortunately it didn't last long.  Soon afterwards Alberto reverted back to his normal state, as captured here with Eros.

Stefano's kid even showed up for some of the fun.

Nicola working the oven.  More pizza per favore!

Nicola

I was pretty blasted on wine and somehow I managed to convince Nicola to let me work the oven for a few pictures!

Alberto really preferred to speak Italian and one of his favorite things to do to me was to pull my fricken ear!  Man I really hated that!

After enough wine people begin to just mellow out.  Here we have people just hanging out as Arious contemplates how he will get some pizza.

The last full day we were in Zonca I snapped some pictures of some of the work we completed during the prior three weeks.  Here are a few pictures of the drywall and platform we constructed for the lift.

Here is a picture of Zonca.  The house Kuba and I stayed in for a little over two weeks is the house on the far right, below the house with a balcony.

The Italians.  Alberto, Francesco, Nicola and Ricardo (but he's not Italian).  So serious.

The Italian's have a discussion (shutup Alberto)

Julius is a little tired from all the work.
